If it is how Swerve described (and I have no reason to doubt him) then the man kind of got what he had coming to him. There should be something in place to bill him for the full cost of putting out the fire, with that being absent I can't put any blame on the firefighters. If you break down and put it out then you just set a bad precedent.
I'm a lot more curious to see how his insurance company is gonna rule on this. Perhaps throw down some negligence claims, I'm completely uneducated as far as homeowner's insurance goes so maybe I'm really far off base on what they might be able to do here.
