The pros and cons of private servers
#1
I'm not here to advocate playing pservers. Having tried a few, here's my take on them. (Feel free to disagree, it's merely my opinion)

Pro
1. You can get leveled up significantly faster. (This is good for people like myself who work full time, have a social life and don't wish to spend another year getting to 4th job only to realized their job choice is crapola)

2. It's a lot easier to make nice gear. (Not that important but on 1 server I farmed about 100 red katanas and scrolled a nice one as I wanted to see for myself the difference between well scrolled 1H RK, 1H sparta and 2H DS using brandish)

3. You get to try out high level job classes and see which ones you like best. (I really enjoyed playing a hero but did not enjoy a paladin much, I found a nightlord kinda OK but not that much fun.)

4. Because you level faster you get to boss earlier. (Since bossing is more fun to do than grinding, this gives you a good feel what it is like)

5. GM presence. (Personally not that big of a deal but pservers generally have a better GM presence since the servers are small)

6. You get to try each class to it's fullest potential. (Most pservers allow for skillbook maxing without getting the books.)

Now for the cons:

1. You level fast so unless you already knew how to grind in GMS, you'll be spoiled. (Not a problem for me, I leveled my MM with no 2 EXP or leech to 12x)

2. You'll be used to having lots of mesos to splurge on scrolls, apples, etc. (This one will hurt as I return to GMS. On 1 server I managed to get max mesos within 1 hour and had to run back to town to transfer to mule)

3. Pservers tend to DC you a fair amount. Also, with many players on a map and mobs there are side effects such as monsters appearing to be vacked.

4. Pserver have a low population compared to GMS so you'll be soloing a lot more and many times you'll be the only one in your guild logged on.

5. There isn't much of a sense of accomplishement since getting leveled up and doing the job advancements are so easy.

6. No PQ or at least no one bothers since you level so quickly.

Well there's my 2 cents worth. <flame shield up>

This is why I got irked when my gf told me she tried a p-server. -points at Cons- But then again, she only tried it. She doesn't play anymore, f3.

I played on a Pserver a few times and I personally enjoyed using DKs, Heroes, Bowmasters and Marksmans. I reached 200 with one character and of course it's not much of an achievement (leveling to 200 is similar to getting to level 30 on a normal server).

The major downside to Pservers as you pointed out is the fact you DC waaayy too often. Some servers are so unstable that you can dc and rollback 5-10mins back.

I opt not to play private servers, they spoil the real game for me, and since you level so quickly you dont get any of the social experience that gMS has to offer. MapleStory is more than just a grindfest, its a very social game Besides I like the feeling of accomplishment from leveling a character and earning new equips every so often from my own hard work.

Just my opinion.

I loved my time on a private server. I had 3 RL friends playing with me on one of them, but one of them was dumb and got himself IP banned by trash talking to one of the GMs. My time in a private server definently didn't make me any less of a grinder. Both of my chars are higher than most people manage to make one char. I work full time too, and go out almost every day. Most of my training time is in the morning or weekend.

It's awesome to be able to try every job. Which I did =D

Nothing compares to the fun I have on my shadower though. He's fuckin sweet lol.

pro
less rude people: ksing, etc (usually true. varies from server to server)
less beggars
easier money = easier to enjoy the game (easy to mass scroll | being jobs like CBs and WKs are easier/cheaper).

con
all ps risk getting shut down = your time wasted.
good chances of roll backs
being MUCH weaker than gMS people due to lack of equips/people scrolling

overall, i pretty much agree.

That depends on the server really. If it's high rate, it's pomegranate easy. If it's low rate, i agree.

I had a blast as one of the top NLs on a fairly populated server. It did get boring though, as I go through bored phases with all of my characters.

I often think about going back to them, but I decide not to. I have more fun with friends and whatnot in gMS. Smile

Last server i REALLY played(as a player and it was fun) was LocalMS...

I do remember the day OdinMS came out xD..That was the best xMas gift ever Smile...

OdinMS was just... Perfect Sad!

ATM,I'm the admin of a brazilian server,it's boring and blerr...There's no fun at all =\

I just saw and tried out every mob, map, equip, skill and blerrr...That just ruined the Fun of MS D:!

It was very hard to come back to GlobalMS,but i came! D:

So,here's my tip: If you want to play on a Pserver, get a low-rate gMS-like and NEVER be a GM x)

thanks for the quote lol.

But on the side, the last one I played, was CheeseMS, which I owned and administered. The fun ended when half the server crashed, I couldn't keep anyone on there ,and adding NPC's didnt work.
But eh, for the crap of it, I might open it again privatly.

I played a little on a private server once, just one that was made for only like 10 or 20 people.

Some really enjoyed it, though I never liked it. MS is supposed to be challenging, and take a lot of time. Private servers totally ruin this, offering EXP and drop rates that are way higher than that of a proper MS server.

A lot of people say they play them for the fact that there are no idiots, but I'd say it is really for the fact that there is such high exp/ drop rates.

Not true. There are idiots on all private servers except ones that are just you and a few friends...even then, there can be idiots. :/

I tried Priest, Marksman, and F/P Mage on a private server, found out I don't really like playing those classes. So I guess it worked out.

I'd say thats the idea use of private servers, to test out classes you may want to level seriously in the main game.

not necessarily. for servers with rebirth, then its easy to be stronger because you can rebirth countless times and have 10k+ stat points. some servers sell 500atk weapons from npc too but those kind of servers are just for "testing a 4th job character" and really dont have much meaning.

personaly i was a co admin of a p server that brought in 2k a month. it was fun and all be seriously, it gets old. after my 4 months with p servers i'm back to gms and a few other real games.

conclusion: private servers are good in small amounts but in big amounts you will get bored to death.

Well, once you get, say, a Marksman, to level 200 and like playing it, I doubt you'd want to make another one on GMS and train all over again.
