New drug could cure nearly any viral infection
Researchers at MIT’s Lincoln Lab have developed technology that may someday cure the common cold, influenza and other ailments.

Most bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics such as penicillin, discovered decades ago. However, such drugs are useless against viral infections, including influenza, the common cold, and deadly hemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola.

Now, in a development that could transform how viral infections are treated, a team of researchers at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory has designed a drug that can identify cells that have been infected by any type of virus, then kill those cells to terminate the infection.

Amazing. I'm not holding my hopes too high up, though, as most of this type of research usually stalls. It's coming from mit.edu, so it's at least a credible source.

This could be potentially bad without refinement. If it targets infected cells, then, if someone is almost totally infected, it could hypothetically kill them. I assume that it'll be safer to use than that before they test it on anything though.

Inb4 common cold gets uncommon and people start contracting super diseases immune to technology.

When we find the cure for general viral diseases we'll just have cancer, genetic problems and poverty in front of us.

Don't you watch movies like I Am Legend? I really fear stuff like that and I certainly will wait a while before trying that.

Now after reading the article, it sounds good and has been proven it works. Still hypothetically, bio-warfare is an option when it comes to stuff like this (granted that's still movie and TV type stuff, but still very realistic). Everything good seems to have it's evil sinister side unfortunately :/

Bio-warfare is plausible, and we should at least think about it before letting people go all "haha, do you really think that works?". At the same time, I think it's up for scientists who knows this stuff to do it, so that I can live without thinking about it every day.

Thats why from the day they invent this type of things till the day you see it in a store takes a decade or two (maybe less but you get the point).
