Quote:I think we all know about the senseless shooting in Norway. But once again, gaming has fallen into the media cross-hairs.
And the reason is due to the fact that the murderer listed training in his manifesto, and that training included Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Therefore, according to a report in Norwegian newspaper Rogalands Avis (as cited by VG247), Coop Norway Retail director Geir Inge Stokke says the retail chain is temporarily removing video games out of consideration for those affected by last weeks disaster. As he said:
The decision to remove the games was made around the time we realized the scope of the attack. Others are better suited than us, to point to the negative effects of games like these. At the moment its [appropriate] for us to take them down. I wouldnt be surprised if others do the same.
We have to think very carefully about when to bring these goods back. The economy involved is of no importance.
Toys that look or function as weapons have also been removed. You can bet that youll hear more about CoD in relation to the shooting as time goes on. Of course, the anti-gaming activists are using this as ammunition, while those who defend the industry are once again working hard. Were sure you have opinions on the matter but please dont let those opinions erupt in a giant argument.
What happened is bad enough.
SERIOUSLY?
Lemme guess they removed Call Of Duty games, which are like the best-sellers...

Nah, that would be if they removed all guns because of a shooting. This is like removing the Fast and Furious movies in response to a car crash.

And yet they didn't remove flight simulator's after 9/11. Hypocrites.

Yes because Video games are the root cause of mental disturbance and video game controllers can make you an amateur gunslinger. This argument has been going on for a long time and i still don't see how being able to shoot a gun on screen equates with shooting a gun in real life. In real life you don't have auto targeting and in real life you experience recoil, which you can't feel in-game, making the game un realistic.
At this point they should also ban all violent movies involving Guns because, by their logic, just by seeing someone shoot on a screen makes you fully capable of causing serious harm with guns.

I never told you people, but actually I play Battlefield - Bad Company 2 as AH-64 Apache simulator, so I'm prepared for my Apache AH-64 that I've just ordered on Ebay last week...
Btw, in all seriousness, I thought Norway also wants to ban World of Warcraft since that idiot fascist also played a fire mage there...

Maybe they'll ban MS when Eos kills Geir Inge Stokke.

We're not the US - you know. This is just a stupid move two shops did out of idiocity. It's not something any Norwegian think makes sense, apart from the leaders of those two shops.

Doesn't change the fact that these 2 shops might have now given some Finnish childprotection-nazis ideas. Worst scenerio is that they decide to do "even better" than Norway and block all trade of shooting and fantasy games in Finland.
Seems sarcastic? Unfortunately not.

Take away ALL video games, infact, get RID of eveything I deem dangerous to society. Why? because think of the children, that's why.

Military Service is a way bigger threat to the society. They teach you how to kill, and with real guns, in REAL world.

However, military service is not as easily obtained by citizens of all ages and mental states.
Ultimately it's an issue of information availability. However, I doubt that games should be persecuted for portraying real-life objects and situations accrurately. A large factor in enjoyability is the realism of the game world, and taking that away simply reduces the item's saleability. (lol nerf guns and brighly coloured poo grenades, notmanly) It's the individual that chooses to use or abuse the information they are given. The game companies should not have to suffer for the crimes of a man who played their video games and liked them.
Especially since many parents who cite video games as causes as violence over here where I live do it out of a desire for the industry to dissipate. Simply put, their children ask for money to buy their games, and given the general scrooginess of most parents here, they are unwilling to purchase anything for their children. Rather than come out and state their real reasons, they choose to cite violence issues in a bid to stop their children from spending their money. Videogames end up being scapegoats for society's failures, and is an easy target because of such people.
