Any tips on figuring out if someone you like swings that way without your face getting busted in or completely ruining your friendship? My gaydar is apparently busted so I've had the bad luck of being attracted to a lotta straight guys. And don't say try your school's gay student union or something like that, because I hang out there often and none of the guys are my type (well a few of the girls are but...yeah).

It's almost the same as being in a straight relationship.
What I first did was become their friend and later down the road, I came out to them. Either they'll do the same or they'll say they're straight.
If you know they have a boyfriend, leave it at that. If they don't and they're your type, then go for it. Sometimes, they don't actually like you at first, but never fear because with time can come crushes. From my experiences, NEVER stick yourself on one person who won't be your boyfriend. You're going to be stuck on them until they flat out tell you or something awkward happens.
I'm probably not the best person to speak about this with but yeah, it does suck when someone you like doesn't like you (or vise-versa) and with a busted gaydar, it makes gay relationships that much harder to start. I've always thought that gays have it harder when it comes to relationships because you have to weed out the girls from the guys, then gays from the straights. Then with that crowd, you have to find one you like AND one that has interest in you.
It's all trial and error, my friend. Just because it's hard (no pun intended), doesn't make it impossible.

Well that's kinda reassuring...just kinda hoping I don't get my face beat in along the way choosing wrongly, y'know?

Nah I don't have anyone in mind, just that last year I had a huge crush on a guy on my floor but never came out to him...and it turned out that he did not care for homosexuality, to say the least.

I've been in that same situation, twice.
It's reallllllllllllllllly best not to even come out to that person, or admit you like them, if you are unsure if they are gay. I did it, twice, under the impression they were gay because of the way they acted around me. It's best if you ask them about it, and assure them they can be who they are around you. If you they come out to you, assuming they are gay, then there's your chance to spare yourself of an awkward friendship.
No idea if that was any where close to being helpful, but just some insight from my own personal experiences.
