In other words, the GSA promotes equal rights for everyone...but it's targeted at homosexuals in particular.

In my school there were no straights in the gay-straight alliance. Even the club sponsor was gay.

All of the following could/would want "To encourage kids who are terrified that they're the only one to feel more secure and show them they're not alone, have people like themselves to talk to and get to know and people who will support and accept them for who they are."

Yet in the end you agree the statement Eos made is appropriate for GSA's as well. You can't invalidate something on the premise that it applies to "everything else" as well. Alcoholics Anonymous isn't voided because Narcotics Anonymous exists, with both organizations seeking to acheive the same goal but addressing different substances.

"Target" isn't the word I would use, as it evokes the imagery of "attacks," which GSA's don't focus on at all. The word "focus" is more appropriate, just as how you could edit your statement to relay the idea that the NAACP promotes equal rights for everyone, but focuses on the African-American population.

Except that was what the NAACP was created for, advancing equality for colored people. hell the organizations full name is the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Yeah i know moot point that doesnt counter the opening point, but its still worth noting a bad example.

Honestly, Hanabira's example was bad as well, though I didn't mention it for sake of including the comparison to the NAACP. GSAs work to advance equality for LGBT people's specifically, but acknowledge that you don't have to be LGBT to give a pomegranate and want to help. My analogy is appropriate because the NAACP follows the same philosophy: while they don't explicitly state their alliance with peoples of other ethnicities within their acronym, plenty of non-"Colored" people have stood alongside those directly affected by the issues the organization seeks to advance, and have contributed in any way possible.

So again Hanabira's tl;dr of "GSA's promote equality for everyone" is technically not true, as it is for the NAACP as well, but in a colloquial sense it has some merit seeing as how both organizations recognize, accept, and appreciate the support of those not directly associated with the specific issues at hand.

GSA was the first that came to mind, and they had available resources to help get it set up such as activities, how to deal with issues, how to make the club interesting and exciting, etc.

IIRC GSAs are also more geared towards high school/high education academic settings as a way to organize students on their own campus. Plenty of other organizations exist, but not as many that serve that function, and no others with the notoriety of the GSA.

Especially considering none of Cactuar's examples are even 1/10th as prone to suicide from their perceived isolation.

My college (albeit small) has no GLBT advocary group. In fact I haven't heard of a single in-school LGBT club/society in the Greater Tokyo region (there are LGBT ppl in Japan mind you). We do have a yaoi club...

Is it just me or does the name Gay-Straight Alliance sound like something that was made up several decades ago?

Just thought i'd update, since I was asked on IRC to do so.
The very first meeting went very well, as did finding a sponsor. I'm officially the president, and Julia (girl that came up with the idea with me) is the vice president. I didn't do an official count on the members who were there, because I alot of people had told me they wouldn't be able to make it but wanted to go but I'd assume a little less than 20 people showed up. The majority of the club is straight women who care for the advancement of homosexuals, then there is a group of lesbians, two straight guys, and two gay guys (including me.) The school restricts what we can do in school, so as for promoting tolerance it's basically limited to our Tee shirts and buttons that we individually wear. We do plan to do some stuff for tolerance day and ally week, and get the word around. We are still trying to think of stuff to actually do in the club, but we are all still excited that we were allowed to have it.
