Applying for a Job

Ok so I'm almost a senior in High School, and I need to get money for my senior trip to Korea. I'm going to get a weekend job to get money to save up for the trip.

So far, I'm going to apply to:
Sanrio
E-Star (Chinese Buffet)

Are there any chain places that anyone can suggest I apply at? I want to do something notsofood related but I understand most places that aren't restaurants only hire 18+ or 21+

Coffee shops are amazing to work at, but it's a pain to memorize every single recipe, if your place makes you do that. Like mine did. :L

I can do that, I'm great at memorizing.

Coffee shop sounds ok, it's just I fail at makeing coffee at home so I don't know if I'd survive there.

I'm thinking about applying to Subway as well, I like Subway and it's always nice and cool and smells so good in there.

Yeah, Subway sounds good. I simply love the smell of freshly baked bread. Besides, there isn't even a need for you to memorise anything if you work at Subway; behind the counter, out of view, are a few cards stating the exact ingredients to place on every type of sub (I've sat at a table that was kinda behind the counter).

Nah, its good experience to work in it for a short while. After that, shoot yourself every time you think you miss it.

Babysitting and tutoring seems like a nice choice.

If you go to Korea, then you definitely should try mountain-hiking. The view is breath-taking and the experience is awesome. If you are more interested in shopping, then I would try going to Dongdaemun which is a giant clothing outlet where you can haggle for prices. They might try to steep-end you if they think you're a foreigner and can't speak the language. Finally if you need a new pair of glasses or just want to buy another set of frames, they are 100 times cheaper in Korea than in America. Just putting it out there.

My sister used to tutor kids in the Laguna Beach area. She'd get around $60 an hour watching one kid fill out workbooks.

It's actually not as hard as it sounds, once you've been working for a while. I have to go a step further than all of that where I work (Ann Taylor LOFT) in creating outfits styled specifically to the clients who walk through the door.

@Tay: Hold up girlfriend. I thought you were currently living in Korea? I wasn't going to give advice because I don't know the country as well, but if you're going there from the United States and wanted U.S. job advice...? Or are you living in Japan or somewhere closer to SK?

And all the tutoring stuff is like superclaimed by anyone in NHS because they need hours for NHS. If I tutor someone I will get mauled by thousands of NHS minions.

Well then definitely don't tutor. Since Meta said you live in Texas, I'd say look for any and all chain businesses in local downtowns by looking at the downtown websites (it's how I found my job). A lot of downtown's have "alliances of stores" which host an entire website between all of them, some of which have a constantly updating "Jobs" section for those looking to apply. Plus, even if something like that doesn't exist, I guarantee you local downtown areas will have a store listing on their respective websites, so just check those out, see where you'd like to work, and stop in and ask for an application.

And from my personal experience and that of my friends, having your resume on hand and filling out and turning in the application in the store right after they hand you it is always the best method of submitting your paperwork. It ensures that it's in the day you first walked in, and keeps you from misplacing the papers, forgetting about them when you go home or go to do something else, or for whatever reason not filling them out in a timely manner.

One final comment: Yes, it's always better to walk in and ask to speak to the manager to get an application than "apply on line" or "calling the store" when seeking an entry-level hourly position. It shows genuine interest and confidence towards the position, which, in tandem with filling out the app on the spot, makes a huge personal statement that's more memorable than an e-submission.

Ice cream shop. So easy. Sort of food-service, but not really food-service. It'll get you that job of dealing with customers everyone should have to put up with once.

Dealing with people sucks. If you work at a coffee shop, expect some stingy people to not tip. If you work at retail, expect someone to get pissed over nothing.

Try Target Tay. Big into diversity and a lot of them should be hiring atm. Easy to learn the store lyout and if you have an issue an easy call over the walkies solves everything.
