Computer... Name?
#1
My Desktop is located at
C:\Users\Barry\Desktop

My name is not Barry. My Dad's is. I want to change it to something else. Not too concerned with what to change it to as much as how. Using Windows 7.

Went into "manage user accounts", but there's just Guest and Chris(me), so I'm at a loss of where to go. :| Anyone familiar with this kind of stuff?

I did this on W7:

Control Panel -> User Accounts And Family Safety -> User Accounts -> Manage Accounts -> Create New Account

Editing ; Assuming you wanted to create another user account, and not so much as modify privileges.

On XP, it's my computer, view system information, computer name, change to whatever you want.

But that is Win7. I haven't played with it yet, so it might be probably different.

Oh, wait, I read the original post incorrectly. Ew. Sec, let me try again.

Right-click on Computer -> Properties -> System Properties-> Computer Name -> Change

Hopes this clarifies anything, sorry for mis-reading the post and thread earlier.

That's a user account name, not computer name. Even if you change your user account name, it will keep that same folder (as far as I know...it was like this on Vista). You can make a new user account and copy whatever you want over, which would probably be the simplest way.

Split Parents. Dad never touches this computer. I want to rename it without copying over ALL my settings, files, etc. I've done it 3 or 4 times in the past 6 months. Kind of getting old.

I think I tried this a while ago: The computer's "name" isn't Barry, but "Box-O-Bugs"*. Changing it doesn't change the folder named Barry under Users.

*I've had issues with my computer not crashing.

But in 7, there's this nice little "change settings" thing which brings a popup "System Properties". In there I got a new window "user profiles", which shows exactly what I want to change. Doesn't give me a rename option. Doesn't let me "copy to". :|

Wait a sec, are you trying to change your User Account name, or your compute'sr? I think I listed both anyways.. Hope it helps?

The folder name stayed the same because when the account was created, a lot of registry entries were created for that username, so yea...best to make a new account.
