The first game in the list is always the canon one; therefore the rival is named Silver. :<

Gold is the name of the protagonist. It's canon, the official manga has him named as Gold. The rival is silver, that's how it is in the official manga. Gold is not Silver ans Silver is not Gold. The games have them as default options simply because that's the name of the games.

In case anyone wants to know, Red is the protagonist of the G/R/B/Y games. Even if you can start him out as Yellow, Green, Blue, or Red. Red is the canon name for him. Green is the canon name for your rival. Yellow and blue are characters that didn't appear in the games at all, both of which are female characters.

By the way, the creator of pokemon, Satoshi Tajiri, stated in an interview that he prefers the manga adaptation of pokemon than the anime. His envisioned world of pokemon more closely compares with the manga version, which is entirely different than the anime series and actually follows the storyline of the games more closely.

How are they different when they didn't even bother with switching the main character? All the different versions mean is you can't catch "X" pokemon. It's more a marketing reason than they deciding to make the game canon and manga canon different.

The anime is different, it has nothing to do with the games storyline. It's the story of some other kid traveling the same places and possibly bumping into similar events.

The manga story line is an adaptation of the game's storyline. The names of the characters were picked from the original character designs made from the games. In other words, the names picked for the manga are the names the characters originally had when they were created. In the game, you're given the ability to name them whatever the hell you want. It also wouldn't make much sense to have the default name of the opposing game in the list of the game you purchased. So for the games, they put the first default name as the version you have.

But I started the names of the characters in the manga were taken straight from the original names intended for the game. They didn't simply pick a version at random an say "that's his name, this will be her name."

Manga adaptions are not normally considered canon, no idea why you'd ever consider the pokemon one canon. They take liberties with the source material, because it would be incredibly stupid to release 2 copies of the same book with character names swapped round just to follow the games.

When I played the Pokemon when I was a child, I played it as if I were playing a fighting game. I would just bash the opponents face in with whatever Pokemon I had at my disposal. However, I did play it smart and used the right elements against others, instead of using fire against water. That would be plain dumb. I didn't really care for my Pokemon. If they got to around 10% health, I'd go to the Pokemon care center place and heal them, but other than that, I forced their hand at battling.

Sure, murdering the 4 kids wearing masks before fighting majora might be a LITTLE different to playing with them and giving them masks, then threatening the mask salesman, and destroying majoras mask instead of letting him leave with it, on good terms, but hey.
