The Ur-Quan Masters (aka Star Control II)
Sci-fi Adventure where you go around in a mother ship, gather resources, explore star systems, and interact with various alien species (lots of talking!). Personally I don't think you can actually beat the game on your first go without saving and loading a fair bit, but the experience is very well done. But if you're doing stuff right, about halfway through, you'll stop caring about resources and destroy virtually anything that gets in your way. Good observation and note-taking will be your best friends. Knowledge of planetary science is a great plus in this game, since it sorta doesn't tell you what each planet stats really means for you.... There's three different endings: total victory, just-in-time victory (depending on conditions, might feel like a failure), and the destruction of Earth. Learn the controls first before attempting to play the game. You'll probably humiliate yourself in the first battle if you don't know what you're doing. Deadly Rooms of Death (DROD) Turn-based puzzle game, in spite of it sorta looking like a hack and slash game. The Architect's Edition is the only real free DROD out there, but it is the oldest one. DROD:AE consists of 25 floors, each with several rooms that need to be cleaned out of its inhabitants (tar that just sits there doesn't count as monsters). The first level is a joke, it's meant to get you accomodated with the controls. The second level is to get you familiar with some tactics. Most of the levels are dedicated to a theme, such as level 7 being all about snakes, and level 23 being one huge slaughter-fest! I found it hard and sometimes frustrating after level 20, and even before that, there will be a few rooms that are memorable for their difficulty and you dying over and over and over and over again. A nice tribute to your accomplishments will be played when you're done with the game, complete with replays of some rooms you've cleared.

Practicing a bit of arcane posting; but one I've been able to pickup the odd game is Pangya.

Cave Story is the best freeware game de facto.
If you feel like hurting yourself, La Mulana, Spelunky, Dwarf Fortress, Nethack.

I agree with the poster above. And put some An Untitled Story there. You're all set.
