Pirate's Niche
#1
Ok, I have a question for all pirates (1st to 4th job). I'm looking for responses about all the jobs, not just end-game maxed-everything.

What makes your class special? Where do you shine? What skills give you a unique experience you can't get from any other class?

And for those of you who have other characters, how did they compare? Where is a Pirate better or worse than your previous class? How are they the same and different?

I can do the numbers myself, I'm looking for subjective differences o.o

Had a hermit, saw a similarity between the two and decided to check 'em for myself. I mainly liked the diversty of skill rather than sticking with one move and making it my life Rolleyes. Ice is sweet, we get two summons at a time, rather than one, and battle ship is a life saver. And oh yea, cannon is pretty sexy Excellent

For starters, words cannot express my love for Recoil+Wings. Flying around at high speed it just.... yeah. I know this is really e-penisy and damage whory, but after so much of my shadower, it's nice to finally have one of those high single-target DPS classes and I look forward to it only getting better with cannon. On top of that, pretty much everything an outlaw has is an active skill, so it's very weird to only be buffing with booster and having this varied repertoire of active skills. On the other hand, a lot of the Outlaw's attacks go out of style upon reaching the next job, and that's a bit of an odd difference from a shadower, where a skill remains a useful skill until the end of time. Octo and Gaviota are adorable and it feels like there's still some strategy to be worked out with them. (Octo as a luring device is something I want to get into trying.

From my shadower though, I do miss superior mob skills, survivability, and the ever so sexy assassinate. On the other hand, I was at CGs getting boxes using my shadower for the first time in a few months, and the whole notion of having pots costs again blew my mind. I didn't really realize just how cheap ranged characters can be.

I've had a Crusader, Hermit, Bishop, Chief Bandit and an I/L Arch Mage in the past and I can say that my Viper is by far more interesting than the previous classes I've played. My Viper has a much large variety of attacking skills, which makes me have to think about where to put my hands in certain situations, what combos to use, and how to do that while maintaining a low potion cost and avoiding Carple Tunnel (lol). Of the previous classes I've played, only Shadowers can match up, due to the fact that they also have to combo skills together for better experience per hour gains. Vipers may not be the most powerful job in the game, but they're probably one of the top, if not the top, most fun classes of the game.

I love the huge change going from my crusader to my gunslinger. I was tired of constantly dealing with accuracy as my crusader, and I just wanted to sit down and have fun without thinking, "owait i cant hit that." It's a relief to know that as a slinger I'll never have to worry about that. Ever!

Another thing I like about gunslingers is their mobility. I don't feel near as mobile as a sin would, but I still have fun bouncing around everywhere with stable damage. Also, the minimum range for gun whacking is different from skill to skill. That's something I noticed, anyway.

I know gunslingers aren't very strong, but they don't need to be. I just wanna have fun while playing a character, and this class does it for me. I like bouncing everywhere dealing good enough damage. I don't have to worry about stat-whoring and X-less builds like I do with a sader. I don't have to think about anything but, "Let's go kill stuff!"

I guess you can say I'm playing a slinger moreso to get away from my sader than to go toward a slinger, lol.

my other characters were a level 123 night lord on bera global and a level 120 bishop on kaede jMS.

I really loved my night lord, but I think the fact that I played the character for three years kinda took its toll on me.. using the same skill constantly was so repetitive, and the competitive attitude of the thief community was just too much to deal with. none of my equips were ever good enough and I couldn't keep up levelwise due to the constant lucky seven / triple throw repetition. the class became very boring.

as for the bishop, it was fun from 1-99. 100-120 took about a week (with 110-120 being done in one day). after 120, when I couldn't get genesis due to the low population of the english community on kaede, I took a closer look at what I would be doing even if I got the skill and found that I didn't want to just leech or spam a skill my whole maple career.

so now I have my captain. I honestly don't think there's anything I dislike about this class. I leveled at a pretty good rate for not having 2x cards. I can BOSS, which is something I had a lot of trouble with on my night lord without a DK around.. and I enjoy playing it whether I'm training or not. I don't just spam one skill, and I have a shiitload to look forward to! advanced homing, rapid fire, torpedo, air strike.. so many great skills to max! with this class, I actually have a reason to continue playing.

the only thing I really miss from the other two classes I played is flash jump. backstep shot is alright, but if you've ever used a controller to play a night lord, you'd know why I miss flash jump so much. hold down the button.. and you're off! zoom! but still, backstep shot is good enough for me.

anyway, I fuucking love captains.

i also chose gunner coming from a hero and enjoy it for many of the same reasons.

i wanna add that i feel like my mobility and mob building are great because of recoil. any flat magatia maps or STDs get raped by my ability to build, get in front of, and stay in front of a big mob as i travel across the map.

my main difference with you, fiel, is that im playing a gunner more to be a gunner than to not be a hero. i enjoyed scrabbling my way up the accuracy ladder on my hero, and gunners are something completely different and not as hard to lvl as archers (sk + warrior weapon!!@) or as stupidly stereotypical as sins. and GUNS.

going from WK to gunner was so different, but so much fun. a lot of my friends were mages or hermits before and wanted to try brawler, or they were warriors or dits that could never do ranged, but i love it. just using wings is enough to play gunner. >.<

Playing a bucc is fun you just need to have alot of control over it or else it will seem slow i cant really say what class im going to or from because i have so many chars i play them all just as much (Hero Bucc MM Bishop) and alot of other chars i dont play on (WK F/P Hermit) playing a bucc is fun once you have control over it and its fun to abuse the invincibility given by barrage and SP Smile

Gunslinger;

Stereo Wrote:What makes your class special?
Extremely fast single target skill. High range mob skill. 100% Stun.

Stereo Wrote:Where do you shine?
Eh... Roids?

Stereo Wrote:What skills give you a unique experience you can't get from any other class?
Invisible Shot's tall range is pretty unique. Recoil Shot makes things interesting too. I'd say Float, but I never use it.

Stereo Wrote:Where is a Pirate better or worse than your previous class?
Best example that comes to mind is Luster Pixies at Cloud Park V or VI. Platforms can be hit from the one below it using Invisible Shot and there are usually two or three spawned on a platform at a time. Last job I seriously played was a Crossbowman, and Iron Arrow can't do that, so I would have to rely on Arrow Blow or Double Shot for such situations. Though clearing the bottom flat part would be a lot easier and faster for Iron Arrow.

Stereo Wrote:How are they the same and different?
Range, mob hit, and damage stand out as the biggest differences. I miss the lack of Range and being able to hit more than three monsters. Jump Shooting isn't a big deal to me since I could do that anyways with a Bowman for the mobility, so the only difference is some situations where you can get high enough to avoid minimum range. The attack speed difference is barely noticeable between Invisible Shot and Iron Arrow so not much being missed there, but the damage difference is huge, not even being able to break 1000 on my single target, and 2000 on my mob, while a similarly funded Crossbowman could break 4000 on a single, and almost 3000 on a mob.

I'm not very good at concentrating on training, so Maple is really about having fun for me. Gunslinger really provides for me there. I can just jump around and go crazy, and the skills really go with that. Like... grenade is worthless, but throw it into a crowd and watch the reaction. Or just fly around a map with your friends using wings.

That's what being a slinger is really about, for me. ^_^

Previously had a 99 priest, 82 sniper, 105 crusader, and 106 Ice mage. Now I have a 57 gunslinger.

Quote:What makes your class special?
It definitely feels more gimmicky than the other classes, and a lot more strategic and active in avoiding monsters due to the very low damage of double shot and invisible shot only being able to hit 3 monsters.

Quote:What skills give you a unique experience you can't get from any other class?
Float. I love it.

Quote:And for those of you who have other characters, how did they compare? Where is a Pirate better or worse than your previous class? How are they the same and different?
All of my other characters had pretty well known spots in the game. What I mean is, my priest was the healer, my mage was the mobber, my sniper had great control over monsters, and my crusader could dish out big numbers while taking damage. I don't feel like my slinger has a place just yet, not in 2nd job. It's weak and harder to train than my previous characters. I really wish I had the time and patience to get it to 3rd job.

I'd have to say that Corsairs are good at about everything. They're amazing single target attackers and possess a variety of powerful mobbing abilities that don't limit them to bossing in the way BMs and NLs are.

I've had a taste of most classes in the game. Let's see now:

My own characters, excluding my Corsair:
123 BM
97 LUK and 50 STR CB
mid-2nd job on all magician classes
mid-2nd job on fighter/spearman

Have had access to, at some point in my Maple career, if not currently:
Bishop, Priest, DK, Shadower, Sniper, and Hermit

I prefer jack-of-all-trades classes. I quest, I boss, I train, I farm and I don't want to have to play different characters to do each task. I don't think any class should, really. My Ranger did that for me back when 4th job wasn't out, but once 4th job came out, I discovered that BMs were focused entirely on single target damage, and the loss of versatility killed the class for me, ending with me quitting the game last summer.

When I came back in early November to make a gunslinger, I never imagined that it would fulfill the jack-of-all-trades role that I wanted. I just wanted to try out a new class and picked Gunslinger because of the massive Brawler bandwagon going on. The versatility of the class wasn't apparent at first. 2nd job wasn't spectacular. It was a lot of fun having so much tactical mobility, but pretty much everything a Gunslinger can do in terms of killing monsters, another class can do better. However, this was about the same time everyone was discovering how strong Outlaws and Corsairs really are, which was a great motivating push to 3rd job and beyond.

3rd job was kind of bland. It was nice not to be KSed by of all people, clerics, anymore, but it felt just like being a Hermit, except trading speed and avoid for a little helping of damage. There's really not much to say for being an Outlaw. The summons are cool, but again, there really isn't anything that separates us from everyone else.

4th job is where it really took off. I didn't advance until 121 because I wanted to advance at the same time as my friend. At 121, I got 1 Air Strike, 1 Elemental Boost, 1 Wrath of the Octopi, 1 Battleship, and 2 Cannon. The moment I got Air Strike, ideas took off on potential applications of the skill. This is the only skill with a fullscreen range that doesn't belong to a mage and cost thousands of MP, or do laughable damage. I don't yet have a high level Air Strike, but it's absolutely amazing for wiping out low level monsters with less than 15k HP right now, and makes hunting for mini bosses and farming for drops really easy. I really feel this skill has a lot of potential. Another thing that I absolutely love is lack of minimum range. It's kind of funny when bosses summon and instead of clearing them out, you opt to intentionally run into the summons to avoid damage from the boss. I mostly use white pots to kill Latanica, because he only hits me 1-2 times on average. It also makes attacking bosses with parties very interesting. At times I wish my party would just let the summons fly around, but as I've been reminded multiple times, "we don't all have Bullseye. Rolleyes" Sigh.

There doesn't seem to be enough things BM could do better than my Corsair for me to ever go back. There's like, Puppet, DB, and having more Avoid. A rather short list.

So far, from personal experience. It is harder for me to CPQ in comparison to the other classes I've played. Even a Cleric that I used at CPQ > my Slinger at CPQ. Slingers are terribly weak, but they will get fun for sure at 4th job. I will be able to freeze and burn at 3rd job, something my Hermit would never be able to do.

At this point being, I 'think' that it would be easier to train on a Sin than it is on a Slinger because a Sin at 2nd job has higher DPS and thus, can solo better. I've done this on my Slinger, it's just boring.

At 3rd job, I'm sure there will be a huge difference.

honestly couldn't have said it better myself. I love my shadower, but I was amazed at how much fun I had at playing my outlaw having pretty much the same number of possible attacks in my arsenal to be used while training.

The fact that marauders unlock their strongest skills under certain limited conditions.

Mobs for the most part, but only when training. They're as good at bossing as they are in training, but not till 4th job in my opinion.

Energy charge. I love it.

Have the following to use (if have many more, i just don't care enough to consider them):
75 sader
93 CB
12x F/P AM (didn't train it, a friends)

My marauder has gotten to 91 faster than any class i've ever trained, and it's been an extremely enjoyable experience the whole ride. The only thing i can say i hate right now is that i don't really have much of a defense against roaming bosses (oak barrel pales in comparison to dark sight in that respect). Other than that, i love my class.

As a Buccaneer, I enjoy the fact I am able to combo 7-9 different attacks on my keyboard depending on the situation. God mode and comboing makes things interesting since it distinguishes the good players from the bad. Are they attacking as often as possible? Can they dance around a boss or Barrage at the right time to avoid getting hit? I also do admit that I am not a fan of squishy characters, or rather I am not a fan of dying in 2 hits, which I had enough of on my Hermit. Even getting 3 shotted is far more comfortable than getting 2 shotted.

Well i'm kinda in a hurry, so here is a short post.

I have a 139 Bowmaster and 137 Corsair.
Where i shine the most and what i like more about my Corsair is being able to 2-hit Skelegons already.
They pack so much power in single hits, and that combined with being forced to be carefull makes it really fun to play this character.
Moving is slow on your ship, and your ship can't keep on soaking up hits.
The thing is fragile and powerfull, that is what i like the most about my class.

Bowmasters are fun but they are bluntly a ''stand-still-and-hold-a-button-class''.
(I'm not saying they are, but that's not the point right now).
Corsairs have to work to stay out of danger and can then mow down everything in their path.
That is why i main a Corsair now, this is the type of gameplay i like.

I've had a 98 DK, 78 Hermit, 78 Chief bandit, 88 WK, and a whole lot of other classes I got up there. I've enjoyed my pirate the most.

During 2nd job, the low damage of a Gunslinger was my bane, but the high speeds and very involved gameplay kept me interested. To 3rd job, everything pretty much became a whole lot funner with freeze, the summons, and actually decent 1v1 damage! The vast array of skills and many different training methods/options are probably what I love the most about this class - as opposed to the linearity of previous classes I've played. (Though I had a lot of fun on my DK, Chief Bandit, and WK)

I have yet to get to 4th at the moment.
