Autism is a triad of difficulties: obsessiveness, inflexibility and social deficits.

Common characteristics of people with autism that you can see on forums:
- take things LITERALLY. "Can I have your babies?" means that person wants to steal your babies. Similarly, "You troll." is a serious accusation that must be defended at all costs.
- don't know when to stop talking. can't take hints.
- don't know when to start talking. may never say anything even if you are supposed to
- can't stay on the same topic as everyone else.
Neurotypical person: "Omg, I went to the Rihanna concert in the weekend." Autistic person: "I went to a concert last July." - also -
Neurotypical person: "The kindergarten was absolutely chaotic." Autistic person: "Chaos theory is awesome!"

Added the definition of autism for people who dont know what it is.

dx'd earlier this year with aspergers and anxiety disorder.. was not diagnosed in childhood - am an adult aspie! although i call myself high-functioning autistic because of not fitting aspergers criteria (affecting daily function)

before my official diagnosis, was self-diagnosed, and before that (ie ages 0-22 years) had always had a strong suspicion of something different/wrong with me.

They are people like you and me, let's treat them as such. I don't see why they need to be singled out.

I was using a cliche. If you change it, people won't identify with it as much.

Sometimes you can interpret the intelligence of a person based on how they type out their sentences on the internet. You seem like a pretty smart fellow, ablu2, so why'd you bother creating a thread like this? It looks a lot like the result of a disagreement, or maybe you're just consumed with yourself. If you seriously created this thread because someone "requested" that it be made, then you're asking for it.

personally, i want to connect with + make friends with other autistics.

yes, could always just leave southperry and spend my time on autism forums. but then i will not learn how to improve my social skills more effectively.

would love to know more autistics who dare to step into neurotypical forums. many autistics just get banned and just retreat to wrongplanet. have tried to think carefully about this post and hope have not offended anyone.

edit: social deficits associated with autism means people behave inappropriately in social situations such as on forums. hence they have a tendency to get either flamed or warned off forums if they just act like themselves. case in point: me or ablu2 in this thread and other threads!

edit#2: difficulty with metaphorical language and reading between the lines. this is why ablu2 thought cob's comment of "Thread." meant "you should make a thread." i honestly thought he meant that too. same with rdal's comment, although i don't believe he is autistic

I might have autism but I never felt strongly enough about it to get diagnosed. I am antisocial though.

This shouldn't even be in the Funhouse, more rather the Rubiks Cube, because that's where this discussion fits. Also, I for one am not autistic, and I believe there is no reason to single Autistic people out. It's a disorder, can be mild or severe, so why can't we leave it at that?

nowaizmatt, autism is lifelong and pervasive. if you had autism, you would realise it is very lonely thinking you're the only person who reads everyone else's comments a different way. especially lonely when part of your disorder means that you struggle to make friends in the first place.

yes, it's a disorder, but NO it never ends.

i see this thread as being like guild hall for autistics. no, there's no reason to single people out for their deformities in their sylvian fissure and the ongoing behavioural and physiological sequelae, but we want to find people who are more like us and are likely to be just as confused as we are by everyone else's comments
