How useful is gaviota?
#1
I was tryna figure out how i'm going to do my 3rd job skills on my newly made gunslinger, and it doesn't seem like gaviota is all that great.

How I view it- You summon this bird thing, it attacks, and dissappears. It's like summoning bahamut or something just to attack once and go away.

That doesn't seem like enough to me to max it over anything else (reffering to the 10-200 gunslinger thing).

It isn't.

Mine is only lvl 1 so its hard to tell exactly how good it will be, but right now its hits for about 2k and maybe 3 or 4 monsters if they are close enough. Its nice to use if I am killing a windraider and its health is pretty low, I can summon it and let it kill the windraider while I jump down and start on the next mob.

then y does that guide recommend maxing it over flamethrower? :f6:

seems like flamethrower + icespitter combo works pretty well.

It's not very useful, but it does help a bit in 3rd job. It's always nice to have a free 5k damage hit thrown in at intervals, and pretty much saves you a shot at Newties and doesn't take any time to cast. I throw it in whenever I'm doing something that has a long animation and I can't move or do anything else (Air Strike, Summon Octopus).

You really get the most benefit from the first point in it. After that, each point barely adds any damage. Maxed Gaviota only hits a little more than double level 1. That's why I didn't bother levelling it past 15.

It's supposed to hit 3 monsters, but I REALLY would not count on it hitting 3 monsters, ever. It hits only one monster in an entire mob sometimes. The radius of the attack is the same or possibly less than Grenade. I think I've seen it hit two Newties at the same time twice, and I have no idea how that happened. Maybe I was just confusing it with Octopus.

Edit addressing above question: People max Gaviota over FT because they believe a tiny bit more DPS is more important than a mob skill they will never use. If you're going to use FT at all, max it instead of Gaviota. As for the usefulness of FT, right now, with it's pathetic range, I almost never use it. Once its range is increased to match Burst Fire, I will probably use it in the same way I use Burst Fire now: quick damage without sacrificing mobility using Rapid Fire or having to mount, usually to finish things off.

I find gaviota only useful when put into a macro as (Octopus -> Gaviota) because they have the same cool down time, so whenver you use octo, might as well summon a gaviota as well, since it takes about a quarter of a second to summon anyways. But even like this, it really won't help you kill any faster. For example, I can 5 hit KO stormbreakers and landing a gaviota on them will still take 5 hits to kill one.

0_0 Gaviota has a same cooldown as Air Strike (5 seconds, usually more due to lag). It also has 0 summon time (when it's out, it's out, even if the animation looks like it takes a split second - same idea with your ship).

Octopus has a 10 second cooldown.

Air Strike -> Gaviota is an okay macro, but I don't always like tossing out a Gaviota just for the hell of it.

Octopus -> Gaviota wastes potential summons, but is probably more practical.

I hardly use either. 4-5k damage from Gaviota at Lv15 is ok. Flamethrower is useless without a Blaze Capsule. I maxed Flamethrower, but I stopped carrying a Blaze Capsule at Lv120 to get a Use slot back. Torpedo replaces it 'cause it's stronger, and it won't remove the freeze effect of Ice Splitter.

when I trained at newties during third job, gaviota was incredibly helpful. I'd summon it whenever the cooldown time ended because it almost never affected my triple firing. it takes some practice to get the timing right, but I think it's worth the points. but supposedly you guys have better training spots than newties now that work better with fire burner.. or something.. so I guess only pay attention to my advice if you still plan to train at newties in third job.

overall, I agree with what Dusk is saying, except for one part. on my version we already have the extended range for cooling effect and fire burner, but I still have absolutely no desire to use fire burner. this is purely talking about newties & skelegons though..

I don't think it's that we have alternatives that are better, just that we have a lot more alternatives. More places to train in 3rd job with close enough exp rates > 1 spot for 3x levels.

Level 15 and level 30 Gaviota aren't very different in terms of damage while Level 11 Flamethrower is completely useless. Maxing Flamethrower will give you more options while training.

However, I can't see myself ever using Flamethrower. Even though Level 30 Gaviota isn't much different from level 15, I use Gaviota all the time when bossing (well, only at CWKPQ since my Corsair is still too weak to Anego). It has no summoning delay, meaning it doesn't interrupt your attack when you cast it. Plus it's a pretty neat macro with Air Strike.

How much longer are they? At least the same range as Burst/Rapid Fire?

Gobies, himes, and nightshadow mobbing is amazing though. Frown

I can't argue that. Flamethrower is good in 3rd job, but for long-run purposes I think Gaviota is the better way to go.

won't flamethrower > icespitter make a good combo, even in 4th, when you factor in elemental amp?

More than some people give it credit for, yeah.

Yes, but Battleship + Battleship Torpedo is a better combo. Besides, Amp30 Skill Book doesn't even exist (or is the rarest item in the game).

Ship rarely breaks during training, especially if we get the KMS reduced cooldown on level 10. My ship only has 8k HP and I can keep it alive quite well. It gains 2k HP per level up + 4k HP for each SP in the skill.

Are you sure you get 2k HP on ur ship everytime you level? So a level 200 would have 164k HP on their boat? :f6: that's a lot

Yeah, we're sure. We'd be pomegranateting ourselves saying how unfair it was if it didn't since we'd have to either suck it up with 4k HP or deal with the long ass cooldown. Course if it did break that much we'd probably be compensated with 210% or higher rapid fire.

I'd cum if we had 210%+ rapid fire. Big Grin

Yes, blitzkrieg provided the formula a while ago and it seems consistent since my ship breaks at around 8k hp. At level 120 it only had 4k HP and 1 Skele hit took off most of its hp.

Ship HP Formula = (Ship Level * 4k) + [(character level - 120) * 2k]
