Could pot help California's economy?

For those of you that live in SoCal (like me) and know the BS that's going on up in Sacramento, we're kinda in a tight spot right now due to the budget crisis combined with the economic crisis.

In response to this, an assemblyman proposed legalizing/regulating the sale of pot for tax revenue. Yeah, its the stuff that young people get high on (and can get you in legal trouble if you are caught with it).

So........what are your thoughts on this? I personally its ridiculious (in a humorous way), but I can see why this could help out my state.

Might as well. Anybody who wants to grow/buy pot in California can already do so legally under the claims of medicine. People think you have to really need it to do so, but in actuality just about anyone can.

But if they legalize it there, I hope eventually the rest of the country will follow suit. Highly unlikely, though, what with the East coast Bible-pushing states over here. <.<

I've got no interest in drugs of any sort. However, I don't see how this would affect anything badly. Its like how there trying to bring down the age to drink to 18.

When you gotta sneak around to do somthing. It gives more a rush. In a since, people like a challange. Atleast that was some of the things the people trying to push it.

One way or another people will get there hands on somthing they should not. Making it legal, and trying to regulate it might help.

On the thought of making money off it though... Lol @ Goverment...

Legalizing pot will actually discourage underground trafficking of it. I have no idea how much pot there will be to tax when it is legalized, but this will certainly cause a large drop in meth labs if meth was made legal, since companies will be the majority suppliers instead.

I am not for drugs being legalized im just against them all together.

As long as alcohol and cigarettes are legal, there is absolutely no justifiable reason to keep pot outlawed. Drunk people are far more dangerous than people high on pot. Furthermore, it is not addictive and you cannot overdose on it.

I think it could probably stimulate a lot of consumption so long as it isn't ridiculously priced. Just my 2 cents.

Any legalization and institutional endorsement of drugs of any sort is detrimental. Drugs have negative health and productivity effects and should be outlawed (yes this includes tobacco, alcohol and caffeine). These effects are more negative than the revenue that harvesting, processing, distributing, and selling any drug, this is generally called "not profitable". This is supported by collectivist, moralistic, and even authoritarian points of view. However, it should not be the government's job to regulate anything.

The general population is stupid enough. Legalizing pot could be one of the worst things they could do. It's a lot worse then beer in my opinion.

Who knows, when you're toked up enough, the walls might start speaking to you. I gotta admit that sounds like an interesting experience.

you should listen to KFI AM 640 then a LOT of those are just going to be voided. Last time they handed out pink slips, not even 25% of the total slips sent out were actually fired, and on top of that, most of those who did get fired were not teachers.


And pot would be a good revenue for Cali, but we are already butt DERPed by Arnold, so its too late now >_>

When was the last time rituals were considered a good thing? Furthermore, cannabis is a gateway drug and smoking it causes lung damage just as smoking tobacco. Oh, and ever hear of cannabis use disorders? About 25% of all cannabis users exhibit symptoms.

Pot is just as bad for you as tobacco. You are killing yourself using either one. Like the other poster said, pot leads to other drugs which is not a good thing and could kill OTHER people where as tobacco you are killing yourself.

While I personally am entirely against both drugs and alcohol despite being of age to drink for some time now, this is a valid point:

Back in high school, our school servers were set up so that we had no start menu/task bar/ability to right click. Considering that we had projects to do which involved saving images and various other things, we couldn't just sit there letting things go as is, so a friend and I found numerous loopholes in the server to restore those settings. After that though, we kept going with it and eventually found ways to edit the images of students in the database, ways to alter library fines, and found all the logs of our school district. My friend only used the first two minority (changing the color of his shirt button in the school photo and having the library owe him 30 cents) and I never used it at all.

Though a year later, they gave everyone back menus and right click ability. We got bored then with everything since there was no longer a challenge to get things back that we needed so we just stopped messing with things.

Another good example of this closer related to drugs would be the prohibition of alcohol. The laws didn't stop the people and it just made them figure out more underground methods to transport and make it, eventually falling into the hands of crime syndicates. After it ended, going to a bar seemed normal and people didn't fight over sales for it.


Both alcohol and drugs you up in the end, but there just might be a chance that this could have the reverse affect that everyone anticipates. Who knows? It'd never pass though and I'd still never try either alcohol or drugs if it did anyhow. So in the end, it doesn't effect me.

Its legal in Canada here and we have no problems. The real problem is crack being traded for marijuana from here. If its legalized crack trading to Canada will slow because Americans can grow their own pot.
