Xbox One
It's still $100 more expensive, it's still the weaker system, it still has a Kinect attached, it still doesn't have self publishing for indies, Japan still hates it, and Microsoft is still a bunch of idiots. Even with the ADD of everyone today they lost a ton of goodwill, and they won't get that back so easily.

That and now they look like they're indecisive and weak willed.

No one's going to care how bad they did at E3 half a year from now. Remember when everyone hated PS3? They can turn it around if they play their cards right.

People didn't hate the ps3, they hated $599, and it dropping quite late compared to the 360.
Microsoft already blew any chance of me ever buying the xbone, but at least they won't be completely crushed under the weight of their own hubris now.

elsewhere on the internet, people begin speculating how long Microsoft will wait after releasing the console to turn DRM back on

the cycle never ends, I don't know if Microsoft will ever fully recover from this

Gotta know who thought all of that was going to be a good idea in the first place.

The PS3 didn't turn around overnight, it took several price drops, a total restructuring of their online, and years of exclusives slowly building up for them to truly compete.

XBone does have the advantage of neither system being out yet, but the PS4 is still the more promising package to consumers, you need to SERIOUSLY sell the value if you want to convince the average consumer to pay $100 more than your competitor.
Price point is the biggest thing, alongside games.

Why some people use self publishing as a factor to consider when looking on a Xbox?. what consequences that has for us customers over the other one with Microsoft stuck in the middle?.

All of those changes are nice, but I'll still stick with Sony. XBox is always been a shooter console, which is why is favorite in USA where you all love guns, but PS has always offered a more balanced library of games. For exclusives, in my eyes xbox's only got Halo and Forza... everything else either is shared between consoles or is a shooter that I couldn't care less about.

Still not backwards compatible? No thanks. I'll pass still until they can fix that =)

I don't think they'll be able to fix that given that the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One use completely different hardware.

Also, what are people's obsession with backwards compatiblity? Do people just chuck out their old consoles when they get a new one?

I like indie games and supporting indie developers is a big deal to me. I majored in game development (counts as computer science) for two years (I switched majors though), and might have ended up as an indie developer myself. Both Sony and Nintendo are really pushing for indie games now, while all Microsoft really has is just another version of Minecraft. There is no reason to require a developer to share their profits with a publisher if they do everything else just fine.

Feeling stupid, why are ppl calling it the Xbox 180 now?

Because Mircosoft is doing a complete 180 on everything they said their console would have/do.

Old consoles can break down. Remember how unreliable the 360 is/was? Also, some people don't have a lot of disposable income and trade in their old consoles for discounts on the new ones (I know EB Games does stuff like that, or did).

They still do, at least in Canada.

Maybe you have more space than I do, but in the place I can afford to rent, every bit of space matters. Only needing to keep one console setup for my entire set of games is a godsend.

Also, limited number of hdmi/scart outs.

I suppose they make cheap places smaller in the UK, in the cheap place I live in I can easily fit more than one system that is 12.15 in wide x 3.27 in high x 10.15 in deep (Xbox 360 dimensions.) give or take on the system.

Its also an advantage to pull in new adopters of a system when the game library is still small.

Take the Wii for example. If one skipped the GC generation, they had not only the Wii library (which was small at first) but a list of GC games to try out while waiting for more releases.

As someone who didn't get a 360, if XB1 DID get reverse compatibility, i would definitely see it a huge plus to get early on in the console's life as i did miss out on a lot of games.

I don't like having my house flooded with hardware I rarely use. It's also very annoying to switch them out all the time, and to top it off above all else, when you don't use hardware (especially newer consoles) for a long period of time there's far more risk of damage. Dust and what not that I may not remember to clean out or not successfully clean out. Also possibly water damage or anything like that. It's easy for that kind of crap to accumulate when it's not in use over years.

Right now if I decide that I want to play a PS2 game, I'm pretty screwed. My old PS2 doesn't support any monitor or TV available to me anymore, because of the video cables. So I basically cannot play PS2 at all without spending money on a dead system for adapters, which may or may not work or even exist.

Yeah, these are all the same issues we have if I wanted to play an N64 game, or anything like that, and those too have their own issues. Batteries on most S/NES carts are long dead, so you can't save anything. The difference is that there's the Virtual Console, or if I'm lazy/desperate, emulation. PS2 Emulation is still extremely fidgety, because of the Emotion Engine and other special hardware crap. Same thing with Wii and X360 emulation, if there's even a stable port for the latter of those two. PS3 as well.

On the reverse side of this, it's far easier for the company that developed the console in the first place to emulate their own product. This is something I believe Locked mentioned in this thread (possibly another) earlier. It's not unfeasible for them to do it, but it may take tens of years for a third party to get 360/PS3 emulation to the point that M$/Sony could do in a few months if it was really their concern.

I'm not saying that I EXPECT backwards compatibility, but it is certainly a HUGE plus when available. I don't know about you but I don't have space for every single console that has ever existed at any point in time. Most people don't.
