That's because you're not using the chopsticks properly. It's easier to make a hole in a patella with a fork. That said, a youngling's patella is softer than normal...
There are very few reasons why your chopstick should point more than 15-30 degrees above the horizontal plane. I hope this helps in your future chopstick usage. It's so versatile, I even use it for cooking (especially when the spoon or the spatula or turner is just too clumsy). I could eat a good meal with a pair of coffee stirrers - those have saved my ass a good many times when I forget to bring my utensils XD
