The aspect of it that struck me as cruel was how she set him up for the big fall, not the fact that she "stole" it. Heck, I'm sure a lot of us would consider taking the money from the gullible oaf regardless of whether or not we actually go through with it. It's not something I would have done (curse my sense of human decency), but easy come easy go.
