They did do events sometimes, and may have even allowed themselves to be spotted occasionally outside of events, but the events were terrible and rare, and not really indicative of what a GM's presence should be: invisible police.
Players should never see a GM. Players shouldn't even talk to them. They don't need to. They just need to know that the GMs are there by the GMs making an impact, an impact of ensuring that people who should be banned get banned.
GMs should make an impact, but it SHOULD be invisible. If not, they'll have players stalking them and bothering them when they should be doing work. It's not a GMs job to talk to you. It's a GMs job to police the game. All that should be expected of them is doing their job as police. If they can do ban notices like they used to, that would be nice, but players should demand to be able to interact with the GMs.
I disagree. While I do agree that GMs should use most of their time to police the game, I believe that they should take some time off that to get to know the community, with all its contents and discontents. This would allow Nexon to actually know how the community feels about different things and respond appropriately (regarding events, etc.).
I don't really play any other MMOs from different companies (only played Runescape like twenty centuries ago, lol), so I can't say with any relativity that "Nexon is doing a terrible job of keeping in touch with its player base," but I do know that Jagex responded to its community's reprisal on game changes such as the Wilderness removal and acted upon their feedback appropriately. On hindsight, it does seem that a lot of the player disconnect regarding content dissatisfaction stems from the fact that GMS leeches off of KMS for content and Nexon can't do very much that won't be undone whenever they copy/pasta the next patch.
