Since the beginning of times, all forms of power had few things to control the masses. Information, fear. Control both, and you become unstoppable. Literally.
It's no surprise they want those back. They already have fear in many ways. That one's easy. But internet fixed the information. It's absolutely not surprising that they want to get everyone to be like sheep obeying everything they say.
