All of the applications that have actual, real world usages (meaning, not games and other recreational activities) run on Linux as well, and far better, at that. Mac has the upper hand when it comes to graphics editing and arguably CAD programs, but Linux is better at everything else. Mac's stability is over-exaggerated by a longshot, which is one of its main selling points.
If I were forced to do so, I would rank the current OSs as such;
recreational usage - Windows > a broken toaster > Mac > Linux/Unix
professional usage - Linux/Unix > Mac > Windows
Not to mention that GIMP and a few other Linux versions of graphical editors are arguably equal to Mac's own apps, technically leaving Mac's only forte at architectural and drafting software.
