I never knew that was the way it worked, and I've seen people using this technique before, so I guess it's not well known. By the way, anyone wanna duel?

Yep, the reason it works this way is because Dark World monsters have the extra condition, "by a card effect," in the activation of their effect. A cost isn't an effect, which is why they don't benefit from discarding costs. On the other hand, the Fabled archetype runs on the same exact mechanic, except they don't have the "by a card effect" condition which is why they do benefit from discarding costs.
