Unless the magic/ranged attack the monsters were using was a physical type (fiel i believe could tell) then i believe its 35% chance to avoid magic+physical?

He probably just posted a lucky misses in a row from a number of tries or he's doing something else. The other videos show that you actually still get hit a lot. Something similar to how it works now. Illusion step just looks like it adds the % to the avoid you already have, nothing special.
