A mate is someone you want be part of your family. The only difference is you also want to be sexually active with them.
Where in that is there a limit on the number of people that need to apply to?
You can certainly love more than one person at once, you can certainly be attracted to more than one person at a time.
Everything else is just social constructs trying to enforce a narrow view of normalcy.
