I don't budget for music (woo being a student and $20/month actually mattering) so I listen to music either on the radio (random shuffle), on my computer (mostly albums I own, some illegal stuff) or on youtube (if I want to hear a particular song, but don't have it)
It's no surprise to me that everybody's illegally downloaded music. Download systems have stayed well ahead of the legal stores (itunes etc.) in terms of availability, catalogue, and so forth.
I have no doubt that the music industry will eventually catch on to the online system, but I feel like they're not there yet.
Just speculation, but I think people would like more options when buying music.
1c - listen once.
10c - just this week
$1.00 - unlimited listening, same as buying the CD.
I'd certainly be willing to pay a cent for every time I listen to a song... but there's no way to deliver music that way, yet. I guess systems like Pandora are getting there.
