You do realize that could just be the item itself going above or below, right? When you maker things without any crystals at all items can have above or below average stats.. you aren't guaranteed to get perfectly average stats every time.
I am 100% positive Black Crystals only alter W.Att/M.Att. Dark Crystals alter Str/Dex/Int/Luk that is already on the item.
Using Black Crystals on anything but weapons will do absolutely nothing.
