The story behind the Black Mage was there to only give MapleStory a sense of depth it had lacked while it was still the focus of a time passing hobby. While seeking out clues on the Black Mage wasn't vital to advancement, it did give you some understanding of the plot attempted by the game for what you were doing. Overall since it's release originally the focus of MapleStory was finding your own path. Some players would become merchants, others would become trend setters, some great leaders, others an unstoppable force. In all no clear goal is actually set for MapleStory. You pick from a collection of things to do if you so choose to, and then try them out making there no real correct way to play the game.
Leveling is but one of nearly thousands of individual goals that are possible in MapleStory and yes Meta you are correct, each player has a choice.

For me leveling will come as it comes. While my goal is to eventually get to Level 200, my primary goal has been quest completion, so in essence I'm always nowhere near a finished goal. I have yet to beat Horntail and get an egg, defeat Pink Bean, and several other quests I have put off for the pure reason I do not yet have the means to do them. I want to finish them, but I know my limits. For now it's been earn enough money to get newer and better gear from time to time, get restocked on healing items, and press on with training between getting Apples and doing a few repeatable quests.
Would I like to get to 200? It wouldn't hurt but I'm in no rush. I have been able to kill just about everything on my own or with minimal help from friends.
Would I like to make a billion mesos? I actually did once when Elemental Wands first came out by selling an Elemental Wand 5 with superior level stats. The money came and went just as fast as I got it. So money to me has never been an issue unless I can't restock.
Would I like to complete all my quests? Eventually yes but under my own terms and by my own hand if at all possible.
Currently I did get one of my goals done which was acquire a VIP Two-Handed Sword with Potential. Cost me 120mil and was 2 Lined but I earned it. I still have other goals as well. A Chaos Zakum Helmet with Door spell, a Dark Lucida Skirt with Hyper Body, a Reverse Bergamot with Sharp Eyes, Violet Snowshoes with Haste, and possibly a Chaos Horntail Pendant, Dark Lucida Topwear, Blackfist Cloak, Smiling Mask, and Spectrum Goggles all with STR % based stats and 3 VIP Rings as well to max out all my stats and capabilities.
Far flung and impossible goals they might be, but they are goals I'm working towards, slowly. In the meantime it's make friends, quest, stay funded, feed my pet white tiger Rikku, help my guild when possible, and be a polite and honorable gamer to people I meet in game.
