To people who know what the games are about, they play the one they have an urge to play, though that surely is affected by the content hyped. I'm not ignorant enough to say marketing does not affect the players, I'm just tired of people pulling the WoW card whenever a comparison seems in order. If I wanna play an action pseudo platform game, I play Maple, if I want an actual rpg with tactics I'd play WoW. A total noob (in lack of better words) might get mesmerized by the shining trailers and marketing ploys, but the true gamer, the spending kind, will do much more research before commiting to a new game. The casual dude that only tries the game can and will do so without spending a dime.
Nexon's ideal consumer is approximately 11 years old and wouldn't have the will or patience to do all of that research. They're just looking for something fun to play during the holidays. They say "Mom I want WoW!" and their mom says "$35 and then $15 a month? No way!" So they then say "Mom I want to play maplestory. It's FREE!" and their mom says "go nuts!" Then a couple weeks later the kid is like "mooooom I want to get 2x exp it's only $2 but if you get a card for $20 it'll last like TWO MONTHS!" and the mom says "That sounds fine. But let's not make this a habit." It then becomes a habit that doesn't seem as bad as it is because it's here and there rather than being cyclical.
I know that doesn't have anything to do with BB but that's what they count on most of the time. BB will just make players who've already played and been bored like me come back, re initiating the above stated cycle.
