I bought an Asus G60JX-RBBX05 about a month ago at Best Buy for 900$(before taxes). It's been fantastic for gaming, and has run everything I've thrown at it so far [Bad Company 2 @ 40FPS on High, 1x MSAA, Crysis @ 30FPS on high].
My only complaint with it is that my keyboard seems to drop random letters while I'm typing now and then, I've been working with the tech support at Asus back and forth trying to figure the problem, and it seems to do with the Synaptics TouchPad driver. Whenever I uninstall the Synaptics drivers(and use the default Windows ones) I lose the ability to turn off tapping and other nice mouse features, but the typing problem goes away. Also if you're going to be using it somewhat like a desktop replacement, then not having advanced touchpad features won't matter because you'll probably have an external mouse. I'm not sure if this is just my computer or not, but I haven't found any other forum posts online that describe the problem I'm having except for other older Asus laptops(and those problems were resolved by doing the same thing I did).
Besides that issue, like I said before, the computer is fantastic. It has an i5 430M processor (Dual core with hyperthreading - practically a quad core) with turboboost built in (stock overclocking technology built into the CPU). that will take the default 2.27 Ghz up to 2.685~ GHz. The screen is a 16" 1366 x 768 60hz widescreen display that looks great under most conditions. It has 4 GB of ram, a dedicated Nvidia 360M GTS 1GB graphics card, a back-lit keyboard, webcam, etc. It's been wonderful. It also gets kinda hot[80C GPU diode], but I haven't had any crashing problems with it even after a couple hours of gaming. The speakers are less than satisfactory but if you use headphones or external speakers you won't have any trouble.
And if you're looking for better than that, Best Buy also has a more powerful laptop with an i7( quad core with hyperthreading, essentially 8 cores) and many more upgraded features for around $1100. I believe the screen on that one is around 17".
If you live in the USA I'd definitely recommend stopping by Best Buy and checking them out.
