It was partially Season 3. I'll explain why.
The reason S3 was good and bad at the same time was because Guilmon was a dinosaur-looking Digimon, similar to Agumon. Main character also looked similar to Tai and Davis due to the usage of his 'goggles'. This can be either a good thing or a bad thing, you choose. It got pretty crappy when humans started to merge / fuse with Digimon. The previous 2 seasons were nothing like this. What made it really crappy was the final-endanime (lol) boss, which is a .. VIRUS?!?!?!? Not a Digimon?! MY. GOD.

Season 4 completely killed it when humans no longer have a Digimon partner, but rather, elemental spirits fusing with them instead.
