Is it wrong to monitor your childs text messages?

If the kid has no prior signs of issues (doing drugs, drinking, incidents with the police), then yes, its a fucked up thing to do because the parent has little to no trust in the child, which means the child may end up being "sheltered" in their later teens, and the parent may be overbearing on the child as they become an adult.

If the child has had those issues, there isnt a major problem with it, but there is still some trust issues, but the child should know that they have put themselves into the situation.
