The difference between competition and recreation is that one is done for winning and will use or employ any method to win. Recreation is just about having fun. So two people just kicking a ball around is not competitive play because there is no competition. Many people play something in between (I like winning and I like having fun). Those who play for any amount of recreation is a casual gamer. Those who do not are competitive players.
