Stats were meant to be used in a certain way. I'm not sure why they even gave us the option to manually input them, really. But people found number exploits that would increase their damage output while allowing them to survive, instead of just putting the stats where they belong. While it's easy to argue this as strategy, sometimes strategies fail and backfire and you end up having to pay for it. Sometimes the safest path is the best one, which in this case was building your characters with the necessary stats to wear equipment, not just for survival.
