Why dont people use Higher equips?

Didnt we have a defense revamp a while ago where the bigger the difference between your equips' level requirement and your level, the more damage monsters do? then again, it wasnt a significant amount to make a difference.

As for the original question, people mainly use common class equips (ex. bathrobes) because they can be used on multiple classes/all classes, meaning that if you have more than one character, it'd be cheaper to just buy one set of equips that your warrior, thief, and archer can all use (Dex bathrobe, facestompers, dex earrings, attack cape) instead of buying an overall for each. That, and well scrolled bathrobes are also easier to find than a well scrolled level 50 pirate overall, as more people scroll bathrobes, resulting in more supply.

I think Nexon had the right idea when they made that 3 atk/5 str clean warrior level 80 (?) cape, but they havent continued that idea since.
