80% survival is greater than even my best chance; a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. It doesn't even have to do with parental instincts so much as the best chance for a less tragic ending. If I were in the same position and even a person I hated were the one with the 80% chance, I would gladly give them that chance. My life is of no greater value than anyone else, and nothing anyone does makes it right for me to decide that they should die so I have a greater chance at survival.
