Personally i put the seat and lid down, but the 3 women in my house leave the lid up and have dropped seemingly everything in the toilet as a result. (my sister even dropped her cell phone in... didn't end well)
As per the splatters, sometimes its just uncontrollable, you think everything is going good then your pee just randomly changes direction..... just be glad we get most of it in the bowl.
