I have both a 4th job Hero and Aran (as well as...well around 8 other 4th jobbers) and like some said before, in non-mobby places Heros do far better. Without a decent combo, Aran damage is pretty horrid. 1VS1 damage is pretty much on par with Heroes. This can easily be changed with a little funding on whichever side you want to win.
With that said, Aran are just nuts in mobby places. But of course that's expected. But out of all 4th job characters I ever played Aran are by far the hardest class. This goes for normal training as well as bosses. But hey this is still maple story, nothing is really that hard.
