You just have to be smart about it. I've managed to get "decent" equips without spending a single penny on nx, coupled with not too much playing.
Selling scrolls from quests gives you mesos to start investing and getting somewhere. It wont be enough to get ALL your equips, but if you use it to invest, then yeah, its enough. It's not hard coming up with money for "decent" equips. If you pap twice a day, that's 1-2 mill per day, assuming you dont get any good skillbooks. If you pap almost every day of the year, voila! 700 mill, enough to get <something> semi-decent.
It's not about quantity, its about efficiency.
