Is Octo supposed to be braindead when you're not near it?

Yeah, I mean, if you summon the octo right in the monster's face then it will attack regardless of where you are. But it seems that if you summon it right at the border of it's range, it can't reach its maximum range without its master on top of it.

I'll sign on and go to Newties right now to post screenies of what I mean. I certainly hope I'm not the only one affected by this.

Edit: Images

 No attack

 Attack

If I had fraps I'd record it so you could see. Octo doesn't attack at all if I stand away from it, but if I walk up closer it starts attacking. It's even more annoying when I walk up to Octo to activate it again, only to find I walked a little too far and entered Newtie's range.

Edit: Bit off topic, but I just realized the Mapletip at the bottom of the screen. A few lines up I got the "You have played Maplestory for 34 hour(s)" message.
