because we as people are driven by the approval of our peers, and that if we do kind favors unto them they would in turn be expected to reciprocate to both further their own social status, but also that of your own?
ever notice how, though, most rich and powerful executives are asses, and total pricks, yet people always kiss up to and brown nose them? same concept. though, those exec's oft times, not always mind you, but more times than not are seen in a negative light?
people want to get ahead in life, and some see being kind and generous as being weak. so, they look out for #1 and damned be anyone that interferes with them. such is society, that we as a species crave the attention and approval of others for the betterment of ourselves.
