For what it's worth, don't go for the hardest song you can pass because it definitely won't be the song on which you get your highest score (unless you're awesome enough to the point that you wouldn't have bothered to make the thread, anyway)
For example, on GH3, I can break 500k on Cherub Rock. Comparatively, most of the songs that have a higher max score leave me getting 300k or less due to the increased difficulty...
If you're playing one of the later Guitar Hero games (Metallica, World Tour, GH5), I find that the possible scores on drums tend to be higher than guitar... but that's just my personal observation that I haven't bothered to verify. Some of the Metallica ones require 2 bass pedals if you go up to Expert+, though.
