The way it works is in all competitive modes: Face-Off (where you almost alternate parts in the song to play in), Pro Face-Off (where you both play the full song), and Battle mode (introduced in Guitar Hero 3 and I believe it showed up in most of the later installments, I'm almost positive I saw it in the Metallica game), you're both playing the same song at the same time.
Yes, I'm aware of how multiplayer works, but the way the memo is worded it sounds like people will be playing songs individually. What I mean is, is it possible to play a really easy song on expert and get the same score as playing a really hard song on expert? It sounds like the answer is no, so it looks like I'll have some practicing to do before the party.
