Memes - where the hell do they come from?

So a programming paradigm is a meme? I fail to see why, as it is spread by education and rarely changed unless you're forced to do so. So therefore everything spread by education and learning is meme? It is quite the broad phrase when not applied to the internet's dumbass memes. >_>
