Newties are set to attack ASAP when someone is in their range. But if there's two people in the map, doesn't matter where the second one is, the AI has to determine which person to attack. So they have to pause for a second before they decide to attack you, since you're the one in range. Or at least that's how it was explained to me.
But in that extra second is enough to freeze the newts so that them attacking you isn't a problem! Also, I heard that Memory lane 1 was pretty decent training for outlaws around mid 80s, not sure to what extent the exp is better though.
