You're really only getting half the game, I guess thats good if you want to get bore quickly, but WoW is nothing without the massive multiplayer experience.
Yes, you can compare it to buying other games, but compare it to this:
Option A:You can either spend $15 a month on World of Warcraft. You can also buy The Burning Crusade for a one time $30. To top it off, you buy Wrath of the Lich King for another one timer for $30.
You have just spent $75 in your first month of playing Warcraft, with an additional $15 a month from there on out.
Option B: You somehow found out how to download World of Warcraft, and the two expansion packs for free online (for mac, which is hard as hell to find!). You go to...let's call it "a certain website", and find hundreds, and hundreds of private servers to play for free, and all you have to do it change a line in realmslist.wtp. You get nearly the same experience, but with less people and a bit more glitches.
Play-a-logically speaking:
Option A is the better choice. You get to hang out with a bunch of people, and you can always find a good amount of people in your level range. There are many guilds that are searching for every member. You can find a lot of people to go on raids, and into instances with. You don't level up quickly, so everything is challenging, yet fun! You can learn and enjoy the game at a great pace. You can go train at one place, and when you're bored, there's easily another waiting for you. For fun, play the real game.
Financially Speaking:
Option B is the better choice. You spend nothing you don't want to. Everything is free, along with bonuses. If you vote for that server on all the Private Server Sites, they give you reward points, which can be used to receive awesome equips, and prizes in the game. You can level how quickly (or slowly) as you want, depending on the server you choose. You can find the games to download online, which are also free. If you play on a very populated server, then you can easily find people to play with. There is usually custom content, such as malls, raids, leveling roads, and more. You get pretty much the same game, but for $15/month less.
As for me, I don't like spending money on games, and my parents would never buy this for me. I really have one option I'm going to consider, lest I choose to make another free trial account.
