speaking of the requirement being "jesus" - i guess you are taking it from john 14:5-7, which says:
Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him."
so what did jesus actually preach again? "believe"? "accept"?
From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." mt 4:17

john the baptist, who came before him, preached:
And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. mk 1:4
and jesus also said:

however look how God treats his beloved nation of israel. read contextually and you may see he is not being unloving - and he continues to do this today. humanity hasn't thought of anything new "nothing new under the sun" (ecc):

God is both perfectly loving, and perfectly fair. he will not sidle out of a punishment "ohhh i'll let that one slide" and yet if we submit our lives to him, not even our worst failings will block us from receiving the outpouring of his blessings.
