I don't know about that...smash community is already heavily anti-online despite brawl's online existing and despite netplay existing for P:M and melee. Online tournaments are really rare, and no one attributes weight to their outcomes outside of novelty because the only results that matter are in tournament, which are not online. If brawl and netplay's online was unshakably solid (disregard the fact that brawl is a terrible game), we might see a larger online prominence, but because it sucks i seriously doubt that anyone would really care enough to rally support to give "horrendous backlash" if smash4's online is worse than expected. The only thing it would do is make the game A LITTLE less popular, but the game will still be an absolute raging success otherwise.
