Actually, I think the problem here is more the media than anything else, just see polygon's prediction of only 1.26m copies of MK8 being sold in it's life time. The media has been hating Nintendo quite a while (and Nintendo hasn't been helping it either...). For example, they were fighting 2 weeks ago about how MK8 was 59 FPS and not 60 FPS because they couldn't find a big flaw on it. The bad opinion of the media is pushing customers out of Nintendo's way, Xbone and Ps4 are selling well but they are selling with old gen ports and Okay-ish games, it's just that for the media those are the hardgamer consoles... When they can't play actual hardcore games properly (like Monster hunter). A clear example of media hating nintendo is when Sheldon in the big bang theory was choosing between PS4 and Xbone but they didn't even care about Wii U, when Sheldon and others had a strong relationship with Mario and Wii.
I know Nintendo will save Wii U, I trust Iwata. The problem is that he is fighting 2 wars: One in the gaming market and one inside his own company against investors.
