I was actually thinking that the MEEs might work just like (A)EEs on weapons plus their bonuses; using that DBG I worked 105 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 120, 120 + (3 + 6) + (3 + 7) = 139. Of course this doesn't jive with the 143 that the DBG ends up with, but an 8 + 9 would get it there, but that doesn't fit the formula. A fun little puzzle indeed, a look at the other equips and guessing might get a clearer picture, but it would still be a guess due to the variables you already mentioned.
