Almost always? No, only nintendo truly felt it was worthwhile. Sony ripped it out of the ps3 almost immediately, and the 360 was hit and miss. Only around 1/4 of Xbox games actually work on 360s.

The fact that PS4 won't carry over digital purchases from the ps3 is a pisstake at best. Peopel whine about nintendo not having an account system or whatever, but they are the ones who came up with a way to transfer all your wii games while Sony didn't/can't. We don't know about the approach that MS is taking yet.

It is not like backwards compatibility is a historical standard either, we have only had it for 2 generations of consoles, more or less.

Unless you look at handhelds. GB-> GBC/A -> DS -> 3DS all had a generation of BC. If it wasn't for the huge shift in media from n64 to GC, I'd bet that would have had BC too, not that we can prove that.

And in most instances, if you have the game, you have the console.

Consoles get old and eventually break. Including BC for a gen is good way to get a good library and show get some consumer goodwill.

Besides that, not necessarily. I haven't had a ps3 this generation. If I bought a PS4 and had access to the huge library of ps3 games, I absolutely would buy a significant amount of them. Same goes for *insert console here*.

I disagree to a certain degree, games that would never have been considered for the Wii seems to be up for Wii U release, like Darksiders 2 and Batman: Arkham City. I am sure the trend will go that way. Less and less game houses develop for one console and that trend will probably continue.

It's all well and good now, before 720/ps4 come out. I seriously doubt the support will continue once 360/ps3 support dies away. Hell, other than ubisoft, most of the 3rd parties aren't even trying to support the wii u when it'd just be a cut/paste job. If you're only buying Mario/Zelda/Metroid on a nintendo home console (replace metroid with pokemon on handhelds) you're not doing it right.
