Chilly I haven't delved much into your post though I've browsed quickly through it. But here's my take on how hacked items or items which were obtained through hacking, effect the economy. They make it unfair. That's a simple reason but isn't it reason enough why they are bad morally and/or economically? If one person can create infinite amounts of bootlegged 'designer' shoes that look exactly like the originals but sell for 1/100th of the price, that devalues the effort put into making the original shoes, may potentially put the original seller into bankruptcy, and what happens to the real shoes? They now become absolutely obsolete. Who cares now about the effort to make them when they're replaceable? You may say that that seller still is well off, but what if that seller just started the business a year or two ago? Is that seller really well-off? That seller's credibility can also take a huge hit if/when it's found out that millions of that shoe are being bottlegged. Past customers can go "oh look this guy is selling fake shoes too" because they may not be able to tell the difference between what's real and what's fake.
When duped items first came out (afaik it happened before potential came out) supposed legitimate sellers like MTSnowy took a huge hit. People like that may have been considered godly at the time but out of nowhere people started having comparable damage to them for a tiny fraction of the price spent under normal circumstances. So now these legit merchants are suddenly weak comparing to just about everyone, potential comes and while legit items in the MTS are deflated and have 0 value, the dupers and dupe merchers are getting loads of NX selling loads of items. Their power multiplies tenfolds because what do they spend their newly obtained NX on? Shiny new cubes. What to do for the legit merchants? What else other than start taking advantage of duped items like rest?
People do not look at it from the point of view of the person who prefers to honestly work for their rewards, because of natural selfishness or opportunism to get the most reward for the least work.
Now let's look at it from the perspective of an item. It took me much time and effort to honestly make an ele wand 6 as godly as I could make it. I spent a good year looking for 50% wand scrolls, bought them for 200-500m each when i did see one in a shop once in a blue moon or got a bit lucky with one showing up when I opened a golden chest out of quite a few. I bought the wand itself clean in MTS for about 50k nx around sometime in 2009 and prepped it to become my near-end-game weapon. It took about 150 cubes to make it unique with 3 great lines. It also took quite a few pam songs, wards and I also enhanced it 6 times. Came out to be this: http://www.basilmarket.com/show/auction/16114616 Then all of a sudden I saw ele staff 5s in MTS selling for 10k nx while I spent hundreds to make my wand what it was. My wand in a matter of weeks became worthless. Good for the economy eh?
